There was something about being amongst friends they knew they could trust that made it easier to admit when their new lives weren’t living up to expectations.
Amy and her confusion about her feelings towards Adam, Sara and how difficult it was with Daniel following his accident, Louisa and her fears of disappointing her parents, Jo and... well, Jo didn’t give much away, but they could all tell she wasn’t happy. And then there was Lizzy.
When it came time for her to tell her story, she didn’t know what to say. Her instinct was to tell them everything was fine between her and Richard, but that wasn’t true and she didn’t want to lie to her friends. But admitting to them what was happening meant she would have to admit it fully to herself - her marriage was an empty failure and she was rapidly losing hope for her future with Richard.
When she didn’t immediately speak, Amy took her hand. “Whatever you want to tell us is all right. Or you don’t have to tell us anything. It’s entirely up to you. We’re all too nosey anyway.”
Lizzy smiled and leaned against her shoulder. “You’re all so wonderful. I thought I was coming here just to marry Richard. I didn’t think I’d find such good friends too.” She drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I don’t think Richard wants me. I don’t think he ever wanted me.”
Blinking back the tears even saying those two simple sentences brought, she told them how Richard seemed to be actively avoiding her, about the journey to see his parents the previous Sunday and what she’d overheard him say about his parents being the ones who wanted him to marry, about her suspicions that he wasn’t with the cattle when he said he was.
She gave up trying to hold in her tears around halfway through and when it was over the others gathered around her, just as they had for Sara when she’d wept, and engulfed her in a group hug that made her feel incredibly warm and loved.
“You know,” Jo’s voice said from somewhere in the huddle, “I know a recipe for rice pudding that wouldn’t let Richard get more than twenty feet from an outhouse for days. That would keep him around.”
Someone started to giggle. Someone else joined in. Within moments the hug had morphed into so much laughter they were holding onto each other for support as they gasped for breath.
“We should do this every week,” Sara said when they were finally able to speak again.
“I second that,” Amy said.
Louisa raised her hand. “All in favour?”
Four more hands joined hers in the air as everyone cried, “Aye!”
“Just to clarify,” Jo said, “were we voting on meeting for lunch or poisoning Lizzy’s husband?”
And they all dissolved into giggles again.
